Reclaimed Oregon Home (540 Sq Ft)

This charming little house sits on a spacious 5-acre lot, despite being a just 540-square-feet of interior living space.

The house, located just 15 minutes north of Portland, has quite a history. Since it was built in the 1940’s it’s been recycled and reclaimed four times. It was first built to house shipyard workers in Vanport Village until it was flooded in 1948. Following that, it was floated down the river to nearby Sauvie Island where it became a goose-check station. Later it was turned into a rental house.

The home’s current owners bought it in 2008 and set to work remodeling it to live in as their family home. It was redesigned to make as much use of the 540-square-foot space as possible with the help of interior designer, Jessica Helgerson.

The home’s “great room” includes the kitchen, dining room and living room. The sofas double as beds for guests to sleep on. There’s a loft over the bathroom and children’s bedroom where the parents of the house sleep.

The home’s flooring is made from Oregon white oak. A wood-burning stove is what the family uses to easily heat their home.
